In yet another display of just how blurry the line between sci-fi and reality is becoming these days, a pilot project led by research from scientists at the University of Utah, could soon revolutionise the way in which we treat burns and open wounds by quite literally making it possible to just spray on new skin.
The technique, which only takes around 15 minutes, uses a solution made from the patient’s own stem cells and a combination of other chemicals, which is then sprayed over the damaged skin. Where traditional skin graft techniques can take days to heal, this new system can heal in just a few hours.
It’s still being tested, but the technique has already been successfully used on dozens of burn victims, and though surgeons are experimenting on small burns for now they are hoping for large scale clinical trials on patients with much larger burns in the not too distant future.
Well played science!
