Imagine all of the things you wouldn’t be able to do if you didn’t have arms or legs. Obviously you’d never be able to compete in any sports, American football or weightlifting or wrestling would be out for instance.
You’d also be unable to look after yourself or to work, no-one would hire you as a model or a public speaker. An even if by some miracle you did manage to do any of these things, it would take you much longer than anyone else. You’d never be able to achieve these things by the age of say, 25.
And obviously you’d never attempt anything really difficult like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. That would just be crazy.
As common sense as all of the above is though, it appears that no-one told Kyle Maynard any of it. Kyle is planing to make the 19,340 foot climb up Kilimanjaro, along with two other veterans, in January 2012, wearing specially made pads made from American football pads and mountain bike tyres to protect his body from the rough terrain:
Why Kilimanjaro? It’s exactly because it’s the opposite end of the spectrum. That’s why, I think. Because I’ve never experienced anything like this, I’ve never experienced anything this long..greulling. The more positions that we can put ourselves in that really expand and stretch who we are…it allows us to grow.
Damn I feel like an underachiever..
